CM Requirements and Logical Design Tools

Over the course of many years of successfully (and unsuccessfully) gathering requirements for CM systems, Bob has created a wide variety of tools to assist in this often complex process.

Because you have to do so much more than simply gather requirements to design a CMS, we have termed the process "Logical Design." To design a CMS you must design the logic behind the system. The diagram to the left, summarizes the various factors that you have to account for in your design. Notice that technology is not one of the factors included in the diagram. In fact, logical design should precede any discussion of the technology needed to implement the design (see the page on this site on physical design for information on technology.)

Mail us! We can help you design and implement a high-level or in-depth requirements gathering process.

Here are a variety of resources you can use to get started understanding logical design:

  • You can request a Metatorial CMS Planner from us to get your analysis started. It's a complete sample logical design with planning templates. It follows the CM Bible closely and is designed to help you boot up your own CMS analysis.
  • Content Management Bible has extensive coverage of the subject. If you have the printed copy of the second edition of the book, you have access to all this information on line in Part IV of the book. If you don't have the printed book, you can access an earlier version of the information at the online version of the first edition (Part IV).
  • The second course in the CM sequence covers logical design in detail. You can go to the site for this course and learn all about it.
  • We created an online tool to help teach and do logical design called CMART (Content Management Analysis and Requirements System) . Most of the content within the tool is proprietary and it is not for sale commercially (although if you have ideas, we are always interested) but you are welcome to browse some of the sample analyses that have been created within it. You may want to review this recorded talk on the tool before playing with it.

Now in its second edition, Bob's CM Bible is the first and last word on CM Systems. More...
