Welcome to eZAAPP

e‘ZINE OF THE ASSOCIATION

OF AMERICAN PHYSICIAN POETS

Connects brain & soul, intellect & emotion, logic & insight in < 60 seconds

The Association of American Physician Poets is a loosely-knit group of medical doctors, other workers in healthcare and their friends who write and enjoy poetry.

Founded as a newsletter in 1976 by Dr. Richard Lippin, membership grew slowly for a time.  During the 1990's, under the editorial leadership of Dr. Rita Iovino, the quarterly literary Journal of the American Physician Poetry Association was created.  It published the writing of about seventy-five physician poets, but came to an end when Dr. Iovino died.

In 2002, the newsletter was transformed into a weekly  email "poetic pause" ---eZAAPP--- sent free of charge to all interested subscribers.  Because of the hurried schedule of most eZAAPP readers, our poems are generally short enough to be read out-loud in about one minute.  To truly savor the poetic exprience we strongly recommend that readers do actually read eZAAPP poems out-loud .

Currently we have a mailing list of about 175 members in the USA and Canada, and welcome new subscribers.  Please see the housekeeping section for more details about us.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO eZAAPP

Submit your request to karlweyrauch@hotmail.com and you will be included in the next mailing, usually  Wednesday at midday, Eastern Standard Time.

HOW TO USE eZAAPP

If this is your first eZAAPP, please note that our featured poem is presented with an "Out-Loud Read Time", usually less than 60 seconds. If in haste, skip to the poem and READ IT OUT LOUD. Usually this takes under a minute, and will fulfill eZAAPP's mission, to "connect brain & soul, intellect & emotion, logic & insight in <60 sec." Of course, if you have more time, read further: check out the "link of the week" and occasional items of "shameless self-promotion". To submit a poem, please see the "houskeeping" section for details.

HOW TO CANCEL eZAAP

If you do not want the next issue of eZAAPP, please respond by return email with the word "cancel" in the subject line, and we will remove your name from the list.

Institutional Recipients please review the content and distribute freely if you feel it may have value for your group. We can add your mailing list to ours if you would like.

Comments, Submissions, etc. may be addressed to to karlweyrauch@hotmail.com. Please send email addresses of anyone interested so we can add them to the mailing list.  We use quality poems on all topics, one each week,  and welcome email submissions.  Reply in 2-4 weeks.  Out-Loud Read Time should be +/- 60 seconds.   We also welcome suggestions for our "link of the week" feature.

Confidentiality Note  The editor will respect your privacy as he would his own. All efforts will be taken to protect the security of the email list and the integrity of eZAAPP.

Non-Commercial Status  eZAAPP is strictly non-commercial. It is distributed solely for the enrichment of its recipients and the enhancement of the practice of medicine everywhere.

vol.2 no.14

DEAR COLLEAGUE,

As the year winds down, we turn to the wisdom of Dr. Benjamin Rush of Shreveport, Louisiana

(AKA Enlisted Ben of Co. E, 347th Infantry 87th Division, Patton's 3rd Army) who is professor

of surgery and Poet Laureate of the LSU Medical Center. He gives us something to ponder

for today, and for endless tomorrows. Thanks, Ben.

MATTER OF FINANCE (Out-loud read time 32 sec.)

Now that
The Drums
Of War
Are sounding
Should we
Invest in
Mortar shells
Or
Body bags?

INFINITY

On a sandy
Broken shore
Thrushes sing
Among
The rushes
Ceaseless
Seas surge
And flow
Yesterday
Becomes
Today
Today
Becomes
Tomorrow.

Those of you who have grown accustomed to a poetic pause in the midst of the work week will

want to check out the new eZAAPP web site:

www.ezaapp.org

There you'll find the history of the APPA, past issues of eZAAPP and a slew of intresting links.

If you have suggestions for how to make the site better, please send them my way.

eZAAPP wishes hearty happy holidays to all, and to all a good night.

THANK-YOU
